If you are looking for a 5*, confidence-building experience on a well loved and friendly horse or pony this is the place to be!
Brian Marquis a professional horseman with over 25 years’ experience in all disciplines including stable management, teaching, breaking in and the discipline of horses. He has competed professionally as a flat race jockey, for the Army as an Amateur National Hunt jockey, at 1 and 2 day eventing, show jumping (grade C) and was a lead driver for The British Army’s Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery display team.
Being military trained to the equivalent of the British Horse Society Instructor, Brian has since enhanced his skills with an adult teaching qualification NVQ4 PTLLS and qualified as an advanced teaching assistant (NVQ3) in 2014.
Whether you are new to riding, an experienced rider or want to return to riding Brian and Longsford Larry will be able to help you develop your skills and confidence. Larry is a patient 16 hand gelding. Originally from Ireland, Larry has been in the UK since 2013 and with us here at Marquis Equine since July 2016. Larry was previously competing in dressage but is a good all-rounder who is happy on the lead rein (for a beginner’s lesson) or cantering and jumping. He is very calm and has the nick name “Laid Back Larry”.
Larry loves to be showered by the hose pipe if he needs to be washed!
He is happy to dress as a reindeer in the winter if needed.
The amazingly patient and friendly Easdon Jess is a 12.2 hand Dartmoor cross Spot. She welcomes riders from the age of 5 who are new to riding as well as those with a bit more experience. Several of her riders have ADHD or autism spectrum disorder. Jess loves an apple or carrot of the end of a lesson and is always happy to wear a hat for celebrations (see her collection in our gallery).
Woody Maggie is a 13.2 hand Frist Cross New Forest Pony who has been with us since she was 2 years old. She likes to please and helps the more experience children progress their skill with cantering and jumping. Maggie is extremely bendy and has developed her own style of stretching that we like to call “Poga” (pony yoga).
